Background of the Study
This study appraises gender bias in media representation in Calabar South Local Government Area, Cross River State. Media platforms play a pivotal role in shaping societal perceptions, yet gender biases in these representations can perpetuate stereotypes and limit opportunities (Miller, 2023). Women and men are often depicted through a narrow lens, reinforcing traditional roles and undermining progressive narratives (Johnson, 2024). Research indicates that biased media portrayals can have significant ramifications, affecting public opinion and policy-making processes (Smith, 2025). The study examines the extent to which gender bias is evident in local media, exploring both the quantity and quality of representation. By analyzing news articles, television programs, and social media content, the research identifies patterns that contribute to the marginalization of women and oversimplification of male roles (Ade, 2023). This appraisal is essential for understanding the broader impact of media on gender equality and for guiding future efforts to promote balanced and fair representations.
Statement of the Problem
Media representation in Calabar South has been critiqued for its persistent gender bias, where stereotypical portrayals reinforce traditional roles and limit progressive perspectives. This bias results in the misrepresentation of women and the oversimplification of male identities, contributing to broader societal inequalities. Despite the growing global emphasis on balanced media portrayals, local content remains skewed, necessitating a thorough investigation. The study seeks to uncover the mechanisms that sustain these biases and to propose frameworks for more equitable representation (Miller, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To analyze the representation of genders in various media outlets.
To identify the stereotypes perpetuated by local media.
To propose strategies for achieving balanced media portrayals.
Research Questions:
How are men and women represented in local media?
What stereotypes are prevalent in these representations?
What measures can be taken to reduce gender bias in media?
Research Hypotheses:
H₁: Local media disproportionately portrays women in traditional roles.
H₂: Gender bias in media negatively influences public perceptions of gender roles.
H₃: Implementing media guidelines can lead to more balanced portrayals.
Significance of the Study
The study offers significant insights into the media’s role in perpetuating gender biases, thus providing a foundation for advocacy and policy reforms aimed at fostering equitable media practices. Its outcomes will serve as critical input for media professionals and regulatory bodies striving for balanced representations (Johnson, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is confined to media content within Calabar South Local Government Area. Limitations include potential bias in content selection and challenges in assessing implicit messages within media narratives.
Definitions of Terms:
Gender Bias: The preferential treatment or representation of one gender over another.
Media Representation: The portrayal of individuals and groups in various media platforms.
Stereotypes: Oversimplified and generalized beliefs about a group of people.
